Karpfenlachse (Characinĭdae), Familie der Edelfische, gesellig lebende Süßwasserfische im trop. Südamerika und Afrika. Hierher der Piraya (Karibenfisch, Serrasalmo piraya Cuv. [Abb. 902]), mit scharfem Gebiß, wie auch der Haimora (Macrŏdon trahīra M. Tr.); sein Fleisch ist schmackhaft.
